Attributes of God #2 - Eternal, Immutable and Incomprehensible

Last week I started a series of email devotionals called, “Faith Builders.” It is important to be ready in and out of season when it comes to our faith.

In a world that seems to be trying to move away from God, you will find many people asking questions concerning the character of God. They want to know who He is, what He does, and why He does the things the way He does. Questions like: “How can God be just and loving at the same time?” “How can He send people to hell just because they sin a little bit, aren’t people basically good?” Why do good things happen to bad people while bad things happen to good people?” In order to answer these questions, we must understand God’s attributes.

Last week we looked at how God is Omniscient (all knowing), Omnipotent (all powerful), and Omnipresent (everywhere). These are reassuring to know that God is all of these things. But that is just scratching the surface. There are lots more to look at.

God is Eternal (not bound by time)
In Psalm 90:4 it says, “A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night.” Peter reminds us in 2 Peter 3:8 that the Lord is not slow in keeping his promises. “With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years is like a day.”

It is comforting to know that the Lord is not bound by time. He has the ability to reach into the past and the future and impact our world with His righteous right hand.

God is Immutable (unchanging)
Malachi 3:6 says, “I the Lord do not change…” Throughout Scripture we see where the Lord says that He does not change. He is referring to His character and His Word. So therefore, I can depend and trust on God completely. Things may change around me but God does not. Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” He is always constant and we can put our whole weight on Him.

God is Incomprehensible (mysterious)
There is a mystery about God. Why would I want to serve a God who can be totally figured out? To study and long to know God more is what our passion ought to be. But to get to a point where we know His every move would steal away the mystery of God.

Romans 11:33 reminds us, “Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!”

From time to time God reveals a part of His mystery to me as I search to know Him more and more. We are blessed that God does not hide himself and yet there is so much to fathom that our minds cannot contain it. What a God we serve!

Why not ponder these things the rest of the week, live out these attributes, and share them with someone to encourage them in the Lord?

Next week we will continue to unfold the many attributes of God.

I am looking forward to continue the series, “Restoring America” on Sunday. We will also be meeting in the Family Life Center during Sunday School at 9:30am. This would be a great day to attend. We will be sitting around tables as I share some basic truths found in God’s Word. We will look at Beliefs, Practices, and Virtues that can help us to be growing disciples in Christ.

Joy in Jesus!

Pastor Mike
